Ninja Master's: Hao Ninpo Cho

STORY:Ninja Master's focus is on the main character Sasuke, whom is on a quest to kill Lord Nobunaga and end his reign of terror and war.

REVIEW: Ninja Master's: Hao Ninpo Cho (roughlytranslated as 'Ninja Master's: Scrolls of the Supreme Ninja Arts)was developed by ADK and released for the NeoGeo on June 28th, 1996. NinjaMaster's is one of the more'sleeper' fighting games to come out for the Neo Geo. With acomparable theme to SNK's hit Samurai Shodown series, it would seem ADKset out to attract the same audience withNinja Master's. Most of the characters of in Ninja Master's arebased on real historical figures of Japan, which is interesting at first glance.Also.. at first glance, they couldn't manage spell the game's title withcorrect punctuation. Ninja Master's? Does that apostrophe somehow make the game's title soundmore unique? I think not. (Nice first impression guys.)

Pretty nice hand-drawn backgrounds.. which you can see especially well thanks to the tiny characters.

Some would say Ninja Master's is yet another 'me too' 2D fighter in the mid 90's.. but there mightbe enough unique content in Ninja Master's to warrant more attention thanother 'copy-paste' fighters attempting to ride the coattails of thesuccessful games that came before them. In fairness, Ninja Master's offers a pretty innovative gameplay element. The characters in Ninja Master's have the option to fight bare handed, or Mermaids palace casino. draw their weapon. It's a coolidea on paper, and was one of the first games to implement this particulargameplay nuance.
The gameplay system of Ninja Master's is pretty traditional for a 2Dfighter, which doesn't have to be a bad thing. The animation / action onscreenisn't nearly as exciting as other fighters, but passable. While Ninja Master's offers some semi-decent-looking environments, the characters are probably thegame's weakest attribute. There a few cool character designs here and there, theoverall roster lacks flash and excitement.. there isn't much here that hasn'tbeen done before (and done better).

These ninja's seem to be sponsored by the ADK CORPORATION. How.. fitting.

At a glance, some of thecharacters almost seem like generic 'baddies' straight out of a 90'sbeat-em-up title. One could suggest that the dev-team was going for a 'more realistic'twist on the weapon-based genre, but sadly, the movesets of the characters alsocome up pretty bland. The characters sprites themselves are noticeably'skinny' and small on-screen.. yet another negative contrast to thebrighter and larger sprites of the top 2D fighters in 1996 (and years earlier). If this game was released 3 years earlier, it might've stood more of a chance.

Ninja Master's
claim to fame gameplay gimmick of 'drawing aweapon' just wasn't enough to allow the game to stand out in the crowded1996 arcades.
Any fighting game connoisseur of the mid 90's could name atleast 10 games that were far superior to NinjaMaster's graphically and gameplay-wise. In fairness, ADK did put some'heart' into this title if you look close. Good try, ADK. Good try.(But there's a reason ADK stopped making games, just putting that out there.)

Review based on Arcadeversion

Final Words:

With brand new games like SamuraiShodown 4, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and X-Men VS Street Fighter 2 tearing upthe arcade scene in 1996.. let's just say it was difficult to be 'drawnin' by Ninja Master's. Also let's not forget 1996 was the yearSoul Blade came out on PS1. I suppose if you didn't acknowledge or playthe games previously mentioned, perhaps you might've been more impressed byNinja Master's than I was at the time.
Ninja Master's isn't a completely terrible gamefrom its most flattering angle, but it certainly doesn't hold a candle to any Samurai Shodowntitle.. and there's four great games to pick from there, so pick one. Furthermore, The Last Blade was released less than a year after NinjaMaster's.. again demonstrating the inferiority of this game. But 5.2is pretty low, Frank.. is the game that bad? No. It's just Weak. Honestly, after playing many other 1995-1996 fighting games,it's preeeeetty tough to be impressed by Ninja Master's.. on any level. Ninja Master's was certainly lacking in more ways than one.
The basic theme of Ninja Master's is certainly cool.. I've lovedthe idea of 'Ninja VS Samurai' ever since I was a kid. Jugar tragamonedas online. Speaking of which, I could've come up with a better title for a game than 'Ninja Masters'when I was 6 years old. This game actually gave me flashbacks of seeing cheapknock-off ninja action figures when my mom used to take me to dollar stores. That's what some of the characters of Ninja Master's remind me of..dollar store knockoffs. Alright, I've had my fun.. I'll stop picking on this game now.
In retrospect, if you're a diehard fanof weapon based 2D fighting games.. yes, I suppose you could find somethingto enjoy about Ninja Master's. But there' certainly nothing in this gamethat you can't get inSNK's Last Blade or Samurai Shodown. If you've neverplayed Ninja Master's, you're really not missing out on much (exceptfor maybe finding yourself adapting some poor grammar habits). ~TFG Webmaster

Gameplay[edit]

Gameplay screenshot showcasing a match between Sasuke Sarutobi and Tenho.

Ninja Master's follows the conventions of many previous 2D fighting games released for the Neo-Geo.[6] The player must defeat their opponent in combat in a series of best-two-out-of-three matches. Characters can change between using the character's weapon or fight hand-to-hand during the middle of combat. Like the Art of Fighting series, Ninja Master's features a super meter.

Fighters[edit]

  • Sasuke Sarutobi - the main hero of the game. A ninja expert and betrayer of his own ninja clan who seeks to avenge his father's death.
  • Houoh - a skilled exorcist who is unsure of his own powers.
  • Goemon Ishikawa - a ninja thief whose goal is to collect the largest treasures in Japan.
  • Kamui - the rival to Sasuke. An old acquaintance of Sasuke's, Kamui hopes to destroy him after Sasuke has forsaken the clan.
  • Karasu - a serial killer and bodyguard who is obsessed with ravens (Karasu means 'Raven' in Japanese).
  • Kasumi Kotenkenbu - a ninja apprentice whose grandmother prevents her from going after Nobunaga.
  • Natsume - an orphan who, after having a nightmare, strives to kill Nobunaga. She reappears in a hack of Sega's Streets of Rage 2 called Girls' Paradise.
  • Oda Nobunaga - the final boss of the game. A tyrant brainwashed by the demon known as Haoh, Nobunaga sets out to conquer the world.
  • Raiga - a renowned bounty hunter whose mission is to defeat Goemon.
  • Ranmaru Mumiyo Kagura - the sub-boss of the game. An immortal and loyal servant to Nobunaga, Ranmaru attempts to vanquish Haoh, who possesses Nobunaga.
  • Tenho - an old Japanese man who was abandoned in Korea at birth.
  • Kongouarahan Unzen - a former monk in search of the best aspect of life.

Like various ADK games, SNK Playmore also revived characters from Ninja Master's in later releases. The main character of Ninja Master's, Sasuke, appears as an SNK character card in SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters DS.

In Japan, Game Machine listed Ninja Master's on their July 1, 1996 issue as being the fourteenth most-successful arcade game of the year, outperforming titles such as Neo Turf Masters and Strikers 1945.[15] Covering the Neo Geo AES version, the four reviewers of Electronic Gaming Monthly offered some praise for the game's special moves and the ability to fight with or without a weapon, but generally panned Ninja Master's for its failure to distinguish itself from the many previous Neo Geo fighting games and for its outdated graphics, particularly the small character sprites and lack of scaling. Shawn Smith and Ken Williams remarked that the game's mediocrity is shocking given SNK's history and the $150 price tag.[8] In contrast, a Next Generation critic found originality to be the game's biggest asset, opining that although Ninja Master's lacks the balance and smoothness of the best Neo Geo fighting games, the ability to switch between weapons and bare-handed combat in mid-fight 'adds dramatically to the strategy.'[9] In a retrospective review of the Neo Geo AES version, AllGame's Kyle Knight called it 'a fairly good fighter that could've been a lot more.'[7]
